Ms. Gay also gave insight into their financial education, affordable loans services that foster appropriate real estate solutions.

Guests: Kellie Holden-Hogan, Founder/President/CEO of City Scholars Foundation, discusses their efforts to help non-profit, neighborhood after-school programs grow strong, survive and thrive, bridging the gap between school and home for thousands of low-income and at-risk youth in the greater Los Angeles community. Studies indicate that children and youth who regularly attend high-quality after-school programs have better grades and conduct in school, better peer relations and emotional adjustment and lower incidences of drug use, violence and teen pregnancy. They plan to expand their network next year to include 12 member agencies, introduce an expanded On-Line Resource Center accessible to the after-school program community, offer more coaching and support beyond the classroom and provide more opportunities to develop board leadership among CSAN member agencies.

Guests:Noah Levine, author of “Against The Stream: A Buddhist Manual For Spiritual Revolutionaries”, discussed his book which outlines his personal struggle with and rebellion against his parents and society. His destructive behavior with drugs and crime which he describes as a confused attempt to find happiness eventually leads him to embrace the spiritual tradition of Buddhism and the teachings of the Buddha. He explains how they can effect personal and societal change.

Guests: Kerrie Morrison, President of the Board, Police Activities League {PAL} was here to discuss this community-based crime prevention programs ongoing efforts to provide young people (ages 6-17) with positive alternatives to gangs and drugs. They operate through interaction with police officers in recreational, educational and athletic activities, young people are given the opportunity to form healthy, positive attitudes towards the police, society and the laws police officers uphold.

Guests: Neil Brandom, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, came in to discuss Duchenne Disease, a deadly form of Muscular Dystrophy that strikes boys and is diagnosed usually during childhood and causes a progressive loss of muscle function & independence. He also talked about the Parent Projects efforts to locate & invest in research, provide education, advocacy & other issues that directly influence the well-being of those affected by the disease.
