Guest: Joyce Harris, Public Information Officer for the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management, discussed their role in assisting with the recent rash of wild fires burning in L. A. County. She also talked about their focus on terrorism what to expect and how to be safe. And, she gave an overview of the Emergency Survival Program (ESP) campaign for 2008, beginning with severe winter storms and heavy rain and the things the average person or family can do to prepare for possible flooding

Ms. Harris also clarified the difference between landslides and mudslides and what causes them, offered steps we can take to help prepare our family and homes for landslides and mudslides Tsunami preparedness advice to those who live, work or travel near the coast.

Guest: Carlos-Vega-Matos, Program Manager, County of Los Angeles, Department of Public Health, Office of AIDS Programs and Policy was here to bring attention to “World AIDS Day” and the events and activities planned to honor those lost to AIDS.  He also discussed the HIV/AIDS epidemic and stressed the critical need to reach high risk groups with prevention education and encourage them to get tested.  In addition he talked about what the HIV/AIDS epidemic look like in Los Angeles County; Nearly 30,000 L A County residents have died of this disease and approximately 59,000 men, women and children are living with HIV/AIDS.  38,000 are infected with HIV but do not know it. Minorities account for nearly 75% of all new HIV infections in Los Angeles County.

Guest: Kerjon Lee, PIO, Watershed Management Division County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, was here to discuss the Departments focus on Storm warter Pollution Prevention.  Part of their mission is to oversee storm water public education and information programs designed to reach the 10.3 million residents of the county with the crucial messages about water quality and the impact they have on the environment as well as the steps they can take to protect and improve it.
