Guest: LA Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, discussed various civic and community issues of interest to citizens of Los Angeles including the challenges of reforming LA Schools, cutting down on traffic congestion, improving transit methods. He also provided an overview of his role with and his goals for the Partnership with LAUSD in which he will take over 10 local schools that are among the toughest and lowest achieving schools in the city. They will focus on empowering Parents and Teachers and raising expectations for student achievement to turn things around.

Guest: Dr. Estela Andujo, discussed the traumatic impact that assault, abuse and severe neglect can have on a child’s mental health and emotional well-being. Some issues they see include varied forms of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and eating disorders, and poor self-esteem. For many children this creates distraction in school that can lead to poor academic performance, and increase in risk behaviors such as premarital sex, gang activity, and drug use that can lead to contracting STD’s, incarceration, homelessness, or death. They also provided an overview of their “Growing Up Safe” Campaign, a response to working with children, their parents and the community so that children have the opportunity to grow up in safe schools, homes and neighborhoods.
